PURITY RING
PURITY RING
THE FELLOWSHIP MUSIC LABEL

No, Purity Ring’s self-titled album is not the duo’s first, it is actually their fourth. There could be a variety of reasons why bands and artists come up with a self-titled album that is not their first. They usually keep us guessing, but with Purity Ring the reason may lie in a shift in direction.
That shift might not be a musical one—the duo sticks to their varying palette of electronic sounds, from trip hop variations to EDM and back, with a touch of the ethereal and the inclusion of acoustic instruments here and there. The shift seems to lie in the lyrics with the duo launching itself into the realm of fantasy, sharing their infatuation with the proliferating number of fantasy-inspired video games.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with that if it’s done well, and Purity Ring sounds both inspired and in the right place based on the 13 songs that they have neatly wrapped into a concept of a strange fantasy society.
