The name of Phillip Lammonds might not be so familiar, even for some avid fans of Americana/country music, even though Lammonds has been on the scene for decades now.
The reason for that might simply lie in the fact that Lammonds was one of the more prominent songwriters, writing songs for so many artists that the list of their names might cover this whole review. Yet it also took him decades to come up with a debut album of his own. A seemingly simple title, Cowboy Things, actually presents a set of sophisticated, modern Americana tunes that go beyond anything simple.
Why Lammonds decided to wait so long for a solo effort just might seem funny, because his vocal capabilities are on par with any former or current country music greats, and his songwriting was and still is at the top of that scale. Of course, help here from some of the names he already wrote songs for like Darius Rucker further makes this one of the better Americana releases so far this year.
