Legendary British metal singer and former Iron Maiden frontman Paul Di’Anno shows no signs of slowing down in 2024; he’s releasing new material and touring as though age is not a factor.
Paul Di’Anno’s Warhorse is an album that channels the raw, unfiltered energy of classic heavy metal, laced with the gritty, streetwise attitude that Di’Anno is known for. Released on July 19, 2024, this album marks a significant return for Di’Anno, who has in recent years been to hell and back with health complications, but made an unimaginable recovery thanks to friends, fans, and Iron Maiden. The album offers a mix of old-school metal vibes and modern production, showcasing Di’Anno’s enduring passion for the genre.
Warhorse opens with the explosive track “Stop the War,” setting the tone with thunderous riffs and Di’Anno’s unmistakable vocals, which, despite the years, retain their signature growl and intensity. This track touches on the topic of the Ukraine war, and is a call for an end to the fighting. The album continues to deliver high-octane tracks like “Warrior’s Prayer” and “The Hangman,” where the guitar work is particularly noteworthy, blending melodic hooks with ferocious solos.
One of the standout tracks, “Screaming Blood,” captures a sense of urgency and rebellion, with lyrics that speak to Di’Anno’s defiant spirit. It’s a powerful reminder of his roots in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. “Warhorse,” the title track, is another highlight, with its anthemic chorus and heavy, driving rhythm that could easily fit into the soundtrack of a modern metal epic.
There are a couple of surprises along the way, with covers of Chuck Rio’s instantly recognizable “Tequila” and Depeche Mode’s “Precious”. Surprisingly, both covers sound killer, and were done justice to this release.
Warhorse is an album that will resonate with fans of Paul Di’Anno and anyone who appreciates the raw, unfiltered side of heavy metal. It’s not just a nostalgia trip; it’s a declaration that Di’Anno still has plenty to say and the fire to say it. While it may not break new ground in the genre, it stands as a solid, enjoyable record that captures the spirit of a true metal warrior.
