For some artists it can be a problem living a double life—playing with other artists and doing your own music. LA-based multi-instrumentalist and photographer Jeni Magaña, who is also a bassist for Mitski doesn’t seem to have that problem.

If her recent album Teeth wasn’t convincing enough (as it should have been), her latest EP Bad News should do the trick.

Jumping all over genres and other musical chairs, while fixing those chairs firmly to the ground, Magana again shows that she not only has the imagination and flair, but the ability to combine some complex melody lines with delicate and at the same time precise arrangements that fit those melodies like silk gloves.

While like every good EP it might be on the brief side with just four songs, Magana proves again that she has much more to offer than just playing and singing in somebody else’s band, no matter how good that is.
