After he burst onto the scene with his psych pop rock back in 1996, Crispian Mills and his Kula Shaker project recorded two well-received albums and, for whatever reason, went quiet for some eight years or so, until 2007 and his/their album Strangefolk.

This time around, the reception was somewhat subdued, even though Mills’ recording output went on a steady pace and with the same (quite high) quality of music.

Now, there seems to be a renewed interest in Kula Shaker, as all things psych seem to be back in vogue. And rightly so, both for psych and Kula Shaker, as the band’s latest album Natural Magick, has both the same musical trademarks and high melodic sense and quality exemplified, particularly in the title track and the Mexican/Indian sound combination of “Chura Liya (You Stole My Heart).”

It is not that Mills and Kula Shaker went away, they are simply resurfacing in the light. Kula is definitively cool.
