JENN CHAMPION
LAST NIGHT OF SADNESS
GAY FOREVER
They used to call it gloomcore and one of the most prominent purveyors of such a sub-genre was Carissa’s Wierd, still ringing in the ears of that band’s fans. Now, Jenn Champion, their co-founder, is back as a solo artist with her new album The Last Night of Sadness.
Is it still gloomcore? Well, it depends how you look at it, or how you listen to it, if you will. It is still a moody affair, with Champion dressing her music in quite a fresh version of retrofuturism with quite subtle (and gentle) electronic arrangements wrapping her delicate vocals.
At the same time, the lyrics retain those dark overtones with songs like “Good News, Bad News (we’re all gonna die).” Yet, on the other hand, she brings moments of reprieve like on the opening “Famous.” At moments, the songs here bring memories of Destroyer’s Your Blues, particularly with its delicate electronic arrangements, another thing with which Champion excels here.
