Dizzy’s third album, self-titled but with no hint of self-importance, would be easy to dismiss as simplistic pop, particularly when one hears the opener, “Birthmark”. Indeed, lead singer Katie Munshaw’s vocals bring to mind even such luminaries as Taylor Swift, and you’d be forgiven for thinking the album would continue in that vein.
However, just as the album art and aesthetic vaguely threatens the macabre, there’s some hidden menace and nuance here. This is best exemplified by the three-song run that follows the opening two tracks, which takes you somewhere else entirely. It’s here that the album reaches its highlight, and you can definitively see Dizzy at their best, with the punchy dance-pop of “Open Up Wide”, the dark, almost choral stirrings of “Starlings”, and finally, the gorgeous acoustic, quasi-country number “Knock The Wind”, all being excellent listens.
It’s a shame, then, that the album can’t quite maintain this momentum — it’s a fine listen, but after a few moments of shining quality, many of the middle tracks of the album start to blend into one. The album’s closer, “Are You Sick Of Me Yet?” is a pretty good rescue attempt for the back half of the album, and were Dizzy to trim the fat from this 12-song record, it likely would’ve been a much better overall package. As it is, it’s good, not great.
