SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BIG BRAVE – IN GRIEF OR IN HOPE

Big Brave

BIG BRAVE
IN GRIEF OR IN HOPE
THRILL JOCKEY

The emotional element was never missing from BIG|BRAVE’s music, but for its latest album, in grief or in hope, the Montreal/Berlin trio turn that emotional level a few notches further up (or more precisely down) the scale.

Guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie, guitarist Mat Ball, and bassist Liam Andrews (their longtime touring member now joins them full time in the studio) here make their dark dense sound even denser with guitars playing a more prominent part.

And it is guitar sound that covers everything from distorted slowcore, reverb, and drone to touches of metal making it quite unique. Big and brave indeed. It just might be that emotional element in BIG|BRAVE’s music that carries it through and makes it unique and it seems the trio has clearly defined the path they want to take on from here.
