ANDREW BIRD
SUNDAY MORNING PUT-ON
LOMA VISTA RECORDINGS/CONCORD RECORDS
Andrew Bird is one of those artists that never stood still, nor does he now, even when he is in a way taking a look back, as he is on his late offering Sunday Morning Put-On.
That ‘look back’ here is actually referencing part of his musical background, and that is ‘classical’ jazz, as he and his rhythm section here tackle a set of jazz standards like “Django,” and “I Fall In Love Too Easily.”
That take on its surface is classic itself, but is driven by Bird’s characteristic violin plying, and that instrument was always a vital part of jazz history. At the same time, he peppers the track with his piano playing and his usually brilliant vocals.
Bird, Ted Poor on drums, and Alan Hampton on bass not only love these selections taken from the so-called American Songbook, but love and fully understand these songs making their interpretations sound as good and fresh as any by key artists in jazz.
