SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: MAGANA – TEETH

Magana

MAGANA
TEETH
AUDIO ANTIHERO

For singer-songwriters, or any artist going solo, it has now almost become a must to step out of the standard expectations for the genre and go the way of introspective personal music with just a voice and a single, or a sparing set of an acoustic instrument. The question though that will remain open is—are such artists able to come up with something substantial and interesting?

Well, that might not be a hard question to answer for multi-instrumentalist Jeni Magaña, who usually plays bass for Mitski and Lady Lamb. On her second solo outing, Teeth, she amply shows not only her instrumental skills, but that her songwriting also fits that multi tag, as she swiftly combines both her folk and pop tendencies with some well-crafted, truly enjoyable songs.

Lyrically, Magaña visits some stark and dark places, describing it as “witchy rock,” but it all fits so well with her song constructions and her quite warm, subtle voice, making an excellent musical and lyrical contrast, as a cup of hot coffee and cold sparkling water do.
