SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: HALF MOON RUN – SALT

Half Moon Run

Half Moon Run
Salt
BMG

Half Moon Run’s latest masterpiece, Salt offers a captivating and unparalleled listening experience, tugging at the heartstrings of its audience. Every track on this album is infused with raw emotion and compelling storytelling, providing a rare glimpse into the band’s collective psyche. Dylan Phillips, Devon Portielje, and Conner Molander, the trio of multi-talented instrumentalists and vocalists, have curated a musical gem that is bound to keep fans hitting the replay button.

This Juno award-winning band’s newest creation encompasses the entire spectrum of their musical journey, seamlessly blending elements from past, present, and future. Each song serves as an emotional exploration of anxieties and the profound yearning for hope. Surprisingly, despite the weightiness and relatability of the lyrics, Salt manages to evoke an unexpected sense of joy and contentment. The opening track, “You Can Let Go,” sets the tone beautifully, revealing the band’s unflinching honesty and coupling it with a captivating musical arrangement.

Among the album’s highlights is “Alco,” a previously archived song that has been resurrected and produced, earning its rightful place as one of the singles. This melodic masterpiece is meticulously crafted and is sure to become a fan favourite.

While Salt burrows into the band’s song archives, unearthing hidden treasures, two songs in particular, “Gigafire” and “Goodbye Cali,” offer a glimpse into the band’s future and their evolving sound. These tracks, distinct from the rest of the album, leave us intrigued, eager to witness Half Moon Run’s exploration of this new territory in their upcoming albums.

With their signature layered percussion and captivating group vocal harmonies, this Canadian indie rock band excels once again, delivering a solid album that is an absolute must-listen. Salt is a musical gem that showcases Half Moon Run’s artistic brilliance and reinforces their rightful place among the industry’s finest.

Mercedes is a Toronto native with a huge passion for photography and creative writing. Her love of being behind the lens has given her the opportunity to capture captivating images for national campaigns and earned her publications in renowned international magazines. Beyond her photographic pursuits, Mercedes is an avid attendee of concerts, immersing herself in the live music experience and documenting it from the photo pit. While her musical tastes lean towards rock alternative, she also embarks on an indie rock journey, and on a day to day, she also indulges in coffee to an extent that rivals the Gilmore Girls, while her Italian heritage instilled a lifelong love for pasta, meatballs, and pizza (as long as it’s gluten-free and vegan).
