SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JERRY LEGER – NOTHING PRESSING

Jerry Leger

Jerry Leger
Nothing Pressing
Latent Recordings

It could be something in the water or having too much time to spend alone when it gets really cold so you can’t do much else but come up with some music, yet it seems that Toronto very often comes up with some excellent singer songwriters.

So, stand up Jerry Leger and get your kudos this time around, for quite a pleasure Nothing Pressing, your latest album creates every time it gets played.

Of course, there are so many ways in which singer songwriters package their music. Luckily, Leger is not one of those that go for the standard voice/acoustic guitar concept but loves to present it in a full band form, veering often anywhere between roots sound of the title track to something that can be called roots power pop of “Kill It With Kindness”,  of course not forgetting acoustic forays as “Still Patience”.

Still, the key as to why Leger’s music works is his mature, sophisticated songwriting and excellent vocals that you really need to make this kind of music work.

If you are looking for influences, take a good look at the cover and listen to the Dylan-esque “Underground Blues,” even though it is only a tip of the iceberg that Leger fully makes his own and personal.
