SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: WINDHAND – GRIEF’S INFERNAL FLOWER

As the sounds of a crackling bonfire introduce Windhand’s stunning new album, the band delivers the goods precisely at the 32-second mark, showcasing first-rate songwriting, studio production and killer vocal styling from singer Dorthia Cottrell. The band’s doomy and catastrophic sound is comparable to Acid King, Electric Wizard and Bongripper. “Two Urns” is the irresistible opener that sets the pace with heavily layered fuzz tones and gargantuan drums that would blow any good set of speakers if adequately cranked up. “Tannsgrisnir” is another standout track that fully showcases the band’s overall vocal package with incredible harmonies, bringing a sadistic haunting feel to the record. The listener is surprised and impressed with “Sparrow,” a beautiful acoustic ballad. The song acts as a perfect break in the sonic punishment, while continuing to twist your mind with evil lyrics and unsettling melodies. Side two provides us with a continued auditory assault that is bookended with two amazing tracks, “Hesperus” and “Kingfisher,” both heavy with guitars and bass accented with ambient audio samples and chill vibes. The final track, “Aition,” is another stunning ballad bringing eternal darkness and putting the children to sleep. I must admit, after sitting through the entire album I felt somewhat violated and abused; I’m sure that is the intention.
