SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SUNNAN – SPAGHETTI SOUL

Sunnan

SUNNAN
SPAGHETTI SOUL
INDEPENDENT

Spaghetti Soul is Sunnan’s sophomore album. They are a Swedish collective who have issued seven singles in preparation for this album. Since their debut album, 2025’s Cinema, the band has issued several singles previewing Spaghetti Soul. Much like Charles Dickens releasing chapters in newspapers in the 1800s, it is an excellent way to draw attention to this great album. And it didn’t matter, because all the songs collected here as an album fit together and the end result is a strong, cohesive and consistent album.

The band Sunnan is deeply influenced by 1960s and 1970s folk-rock, psychedelic pop music. Sunnan would not have been out of place at Woodstock. Their melodies are usually quite pleasant, and deceptively simple. There is a lot going on throughout this album. The album opens with the instrumental “Arvet”, which is a lovely meditative track.

Some of the band’s influences come through stronger in some songs than others. “Sunday Afternoon” does have hints of “For Liquorice John” by Procol Harum. And other songs channel The Beatles and early 1970s Pink Floyd. But in the end the band makes the music their own. A song such as “I Need You” incorporates folk music for a brief moment, creating a very different feeling than other songs. And as with other songs, the harmonies are flawless. The playing is top notch on Spaghetti Soul, but a great deal of time has been spent on arranging the vocals and harmonies for each song.

The album closes with another very melodic and cheerful instrumental, “ARP 3000.” In between the two instrumentals are songs about love, lost and found love, and life. Spaghetti Soul is a brilliant album full of rich melodies based on a history of pop-rock music. Sunnan has created a very beautiful album, one that pays tribute to bands before it while, at the same time looking forward to new pop music and sounds. Sunnan are finding their feet with this album, and perhaps releasing seven singles up until the release on the album was a good idea. It certainly did not hurt them any, if anything, it contributed to making a very strong and enjoyable album.
