Was the world really crying out for a deluxe version of an album that only came out in the early knockings of 2025? Initially I felt not, perhaps because I didn’t really like the initial cut of People Watching (and judging by the internet, I was one of the only people who didn’t). Still, perhaps a fresh ear and eight new tracks might win me over?

He’s not messing about, as the new artillery here includes collaborations with hot act Olivia Dean and certified legend Elton John. His collaboration with Sir Elton, “Talk To You,” is reminiscent of about a 1000 Springsteen songs, and certainly won’t throw off the facsimile complaints previously, but it’s much better than most of its original album-mates, and his collaboration with Dean, “Rein Me In,” is suitably bouncy and cheerful. “Tyrants” is also full of energy and spite, perhaps carrying a more important message than ever in turbulent times.

To be fair, on all eight of these tracks, more of Fender’s heart comes through, and the songs are a bit more memorable as a result. “I’m Always on Stage” was a good start to the deluxe reimagining and an attempt to change my mind, because it’s the best of Fender; heartfelt, real, and raw, no longer choking under the weight of the original album’s glitz.

Perhaps I’m going soft after a difficult year, but I finally ‘get’ this album. I’m still not with the herd on its quality, but its much better with its additions, that’s for sure.
