SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CARSON McHONE – PENTIMENTO

Carson McHone

CARSON McHONE
PENTIMENTO
MERGE RECORDS

Some intriguing music brewing over in Ontario when it comes to the very broad category of singer-songwriters these days. Carson McHone’s latest album Pentimento is here to show us why. The reason is quite simple and complicated at the same time: what used to be a genre that was focused on a single artist who bases his music on vocals and an acoustic instrument, has become music that goes all over the place, covering a wide ground that resides somewhere in the imagination of a particular artist.

That is where a wide-spanning, 16-track album McHone has come up with here resides, as it also lyrically covers a wide ground. In her own words, “All of the songs of Pentimento began as poems against the backdrop of global crisis, national borders, civil unrest, birth, death, bad love, new love, true love.”

It is all intriguing, detailed, and above all, something you can listen to with quite some ease, as McHone’s music oozes with inventiveness and talent.
