SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: MINIHORSE – BIG LACK

Big Lack

RATING

I first got wind of Ypsilanti, Michigan “Introvert Rock” band Minihorse a few months ago. Someone in my musical universe told me they were a band to watch out for and, lo and behold, their debut EP Big Lack showed up this week. Tracked at Collins’ home studio, Big Lack delivers cooling sarcasm over a wallop of scuzzy powerpop. Led by Ben Collins on guitar along with bandmates Christopher Anderson on bass and John Fossum on drums, the band produce solid and catchy tunes in a precise and melodic manner beginning with the opening track “Blueblack.” The final three cuts on Big Lack — “Thriller,” “Pinstripe Web” and “Color” — show Minihorse scattering hooks like firecrackers on a late summer blacktop. A band to look out for in 2017.
