SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: 2 WOLVES – OUR FAULT

2 Wolves

2 Wolves
Our Fault
Inverse Records

Five years since their previous release, 2 Wolves, the gothic metal band from Finland, are back to amaze us with their new studio album, Our Fault, which is a tremendous mix of rhythms.

Our Fault is without a doubt a wave of surprises. The album is dark, melodic, and melancholic. It brings a weird equilibrium to all its songs, listeners can expect to see how the melancholy, which is influenced by the Finnish landscapes, melts smoothly into darkness and rapid tempos as the music advances.

Although 2 Wolves is a gothic metal band, it is interesting to see how other genres such as death metal, doom, and black converge together in the different songs. The first theme, “Unwritten Names”, goes from melodic death metal to doom metal to progressive metal to melodic again. Not to mention the little sparkles of thrashy guitars which remind us of Nightwish.

“Strange Patterns”, it is a pure demonstration of death metal and savageness, as well, the introduction of harmony and operatic vocals in the middle of the tracks give one the sense of having listened to Cradle of Filth.

The two acoustic numbers, “Regret” and “Blame”, are worthy of  any movie soundtrack or to be used as the background to a yoga session, not to mention “Tuhat Kertaa” which is the only song in Finnish and is probably the slowest but heaviest one on the entire album.

Overall, Our Fault is an amazing album that will make you feel all kinds of emotions, it could transport you to the dark ages, to a yoga session, or to an epic mosh pit.

Sebastian Mahecha is a postgraduate journalism student at Humber College. I’m passionate about music, I enjoy listening to mostly any kind of music, from thrash metal to most underground salsa. Politics and social justice have been of my interest for many years, so whenever a new musician records a song about controversial topics I’ll be there to take a look.
