CMW RADIO MUSIC AWARDS Friday, March 12, 2010
Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Gala luncheon in Ballroom

The CMW Radio Music Awards are a annual gala awards presentation that takes place in the Friday afternoon in the Royal York Hotel’s Ballroom. At $125 a ticket, usually only involved industry and nominated artists attend. Being media this year, I thought I’d be watching it on the TV screen in the media room, however, we were escorted to the ballroom. Standing randomly around a ballroom full of people sitting at fancy tables felt . . . awkward and in the way no matter where we stood. Then the head of media relations asked if we had interviews scheduled and would need to go back and forth to the media room. A writer from another outlet and I said no, so we were told in that case to go to the back and if there was a free seat at a table, go for it. Not only were there free seats, there were a few free tables so the two of us had a table to ourselves and our own waiter who watched over our every food or beverage need. SCORE!

The show was entertaining, with performances by The New Cities, The Midway State, Dean Brody, Karl Wolf, Stereos, Carly Rae Jepsen and Arkels. When radio broadcast industry Hall of Fame winner Rob Braide accepted his award, he asked us all to look at the program in front of us, then said, “I know I don’t remember a lot about the ’80s, but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t in Platinum Blonde.” At the end of the night it was Platinum Blonde’s turn to be inducted into the Hall of Fame beginning with a video tribute to the band’s history. Mark Holmes gave a heartfelt and meaningful acceptance speech, even choking up when talking about band member Kenny MacLean, who passed away in 2008 after convincing the rest of the band to reunite. Also during the ceremony they showed the video for the new Canadian all-star tribute to Haiti: “Wavin’ Flag.”
